Applications

Automobiles & Aviation

Mica in its variegated forms is used as a heat shield in aeroplanes and vehicles. Owing to its principal property of excellent insulation and minimal weight, it is an indispensible part of the industry in various forms. It acts a flame-retardant in case of mishaps.

The aviation industries black box flight recorders use mica for protection. It is also used in various vehicles for its interiors, in-order to fireproof the same.

Automobile parts such as brake linings and clutch plates use mica to provide lightweight insulation and to mitigate sound and vibration. The mica inforced polymers used for components such as fenders and fascia have enhanced durability, strength and stiffness, reducing sound and vibration. It improves stability to various environmental and internal factors such as heat, chemicals and ultraviolet radiation.

Ground Mica is an essential inert filler and used to release moulds, such as tires. The texture of Mica prevents sticking and blocking. Mica also improves the quality of rubber by making it more resilient and resistant to gas permeation.

Brilliance of mica, is a key component in pearlescent paints in the automotive industry.

In the coming decade or two Mica scrap and sheets’ consumption will increase in the new age technology of Electric Vehicles (EV). Mica is instrumental for the insulation of batteries for EV as the only mineral qualified to prevent fire mishaps.
